NATIONAL COVERAGE

One validated major-metro source in every contiguous state.

ShelterScan's current release includes at least one bounded public shelter-listing program connected to a major metro area in each of the 48 contiguous states. That is a national starting point—not complete statewide or metro-wide coverage.

What “covered” means here

Each state has a validated source program with public dog or cat photos, stable source identity, explicit custody or adoption semantics, and working image bindings. Sources vary: some publish shelter-held found or stray animals, some publish adoption animals, and some publish mixed current inventories.

The live directory on the homepage is the authority for what is searchable right now. Empty feeds, source outages, photo problems, and refresh delays can temporarily reduce live coverage.

Validated metro starting points

These are the initial metro anchors for the 48-state release. A metro name identifies the intended search area; it does not mean every organization, intake, foster placement, or animal in that metro is indexed.

Coverage still needs to deepen

The next expansion phase should add high-population metros not yet represented, fill municipal and county gaps inside existing metros, and prioritize shelter-held found or stray sources where current coverage is adoption-only. No-match results must never be treated as proof that an animal is absent.
